“The Light of the World”

 

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the Light of the world.  Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life.    John 8:12

 

This meeting took place during the Feast of Tabernacles, and one distinct feature was that the large lamps in the women’s court were lit, the wicks for the lamps were made from the worn-out robes of the priests.  They illuminated the temple area, and the people would sing praises and dance.  It was a reminder for the Jews, of their wanderings in the wilderness, and of God’s provisions for them.

 

It was a very fitting setting for Jesus’ proclamation, that He was the “Light of the world.” The world was and is still in DARKNESS, which symbolizes evil, sin and ignorance.  LIGHT, however, symbolizes God and His holiness.

 

Jesus is the LIGHT, but not only the LIGHT among many other lights.  He is the ONLY TRUE LIGHT, sent for the WHOLE world. 

 

When Jesus said:  “Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, He was speaking of SALVATION, and WHOEVER believes and obeys Him will be given God’s free gift of SALVATION.  They will not be inclined to LIVE in DARKNESS, living a life of evilness and sin, but will have the LIGHT of LIFE, who will guide them in the way of righteousness.  They will NOT remain in the DARKNESS of evilness, sin and ignorance, but will be transformed to WALK or LIVE in the LIGHT. 

 

At another time, closer to His date with destiny, and another group of people, Jesus said:  “You are going to have the LIGHT just a little while longer.  Walk while you have the LIGHT, before DARKNESS overtakes you. Whoever WALKS in the DARK does not know where they are going.  Believe in the LIGHT while you have the LIGHT, so that you may become Children of Light.”  (John12:35-36) 

 

The days of Jesus’ public ministry were over, and the opportunity for the people to come to the LIGHT was limited.    And the darkness was coming, evil powers and sin would be holding people under their power.  Those who walk in the DARK does not know where they are going.  They don’t know what life is all about and where they are headed.  They STUMBLE and FALL in the evilness and sin of their lives, they are the UNBELIEVERS, who have REJECTED the LIGHT and are doomed to spend an eternity in Hell.

 

Jesus’ advice to you is to; “BELIEVE in the LIGHT while you have the LIGHT, so that you may become the Children of Light.”  God’s Spirit will NOT always strive with mankind.  If you are an UNBELIEVER, then your time is LIMITED.  You MUST come to God with a TRUE REPENTANT HEART, CONFESSING your sins to Him and asking Him for His FORGIVENESS, BELIEVING, with ALL your HEART that Jesus died for YOU, and is ALIVE in Heaven, making intercession for you, before God, then ACCEPT His gift of SALVATION, and TRULY become a Child of LIGHT, who is walking in the LIGHT.  Do it NOW, while you still can.  He’s waiting and coming SOON!!!
